In 1867, Canada officially became a nation, uniting a few provinces, the large area of Rupert's Land – which at the time belonged to the Hudson's Bay Company – as well as the North-Western Territory. The Confederation started in 1864, when many leaders decided it would be profitable to join into one country. To accomplish this, they met frequently, and together they wrote the constitution for their new country. This constitution then had to be approved by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It was approved, and then referred to as the British North America Act. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Canada (Ontario and Quebec) were then united into the Dominion of Canada. In 1870, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories joined Canada; in 1871, British Columbia; in 1873, P.E.I; in 1898, Yukon. The rest of the provinces that are now apart of Canada joined between the years 1905 and 1999.
The Confederation is important to the history of Canada, because it was the complete formation of our country. It united provinces and territories that were once separate, and it built the great nation we know now. If it wasn't for the Fathers of Confederation, or the leaders who met and formed the constitution, 'Canada' would be much smaller – perhaps only Ontario and Quebec, as it was before the constitution, and we would be lacking all the contributions of the other provinces. The Confederation unified all the Europeans and First Nations living on the same soil under one flag and one name – this would be Canada.
